Sample bay area personal budget4/15/2024 ![]() ![]() It sounds like a lot of work, but having trained in a professional kitchen, it's more about the discipline and planning ahead and cleaning as you go and prep-work, cooking in bulk, and smartly planning around creative uses of leftovers. And for what it's worth, anything I buy at Safeway I make sure it's on sale. The amount of food I buy can typically feed a family of 5+. after roasting a whole chicken, the bones + weird "waste" cuts of veggies (onions, leeks, carrot tops, herbs, etc.) get tossed in a stockpot and made into the tasty chicken stock (which I'll re-use in risotto, chicken curry, rice), etc. Leftovers get made into enchiladas or taco salad (fried tortilla strips) or burritos to mix it up.Īlso minimal waste - e.g. Big heaping sides of Mexican restaurant-style rice and refried beans (start with the cheap dried beans). That includes 1-2 meals/week from pickup restaurant. 2 adults around 500/month for groceries and household goods. Similar story with when I do Mexican - oven roast a big cut and turn into pulled pork, make tacos with salsas and homemade (or authentic Mexican store tortillas) for super cheap. Budgeting is a critical component of achieving financial success and maintaining control over your personal finances. So thats around 700/month, but we could definitely eliminate the take out if we wanted to save money, and some of our grocery choices are high end cheese, chocolate & booze. The next day, I'll turn the risotto into arancini/suppli using homemade breadcrumbs (using leftover ends of bread I dried). ![]() I'll make risotto and have a big lunch with a side salad. Indian and Italian are very conducive to bulk and leftovers. I tend to split my time making 40% Italian dishes, 40% Indian dishes, and 20% other. $50 Indian or Mexican grocer (spices, lentils, beans, veggies). ![]() $200 Costco (pasta, milk, meat, bulk veggies, olive oil, wine, etc.).Last month I bought 75 lbs of tomatoes - normal price was $2-3/pound but I got them in bulk for $0.50/lb and canned a ton of pasta sauce.$160 farmers market (tons of veggies to roast, make into soups, daals, weird bits made into stock, fruit, etc.).Per month - and most of this is in excess: ![]()
